Contact dermatitis is a type of rash that causes your skin to get red, itch, and in some cases feel like it is burning. There are two main classifications for contact dermatitis - allergic and irritant. When you experience an allergic reaction as a result of coming into contact with something, your body releases antibodies to fight the invaders that it perceives as a threat. Conversely, when you experience a rash as the result of an irritant, the item you've come into contact with removes the surface oils of the skin causing damage; in this case your immune system does not play a role. As you can imagine, in each case the triggers are different, but the reactions and treatment recommendations are generally very similar.
When to Seek Physician Aid
Most of the time you can treat contact dermatitis yourself at home, but in some cases you may end up needing the assistance of a doctor. When treating at home, follow the instructions below:
Wash the affected area with mild soap and cool water immediately
Apply hydrocortisone cream, if experiencing an allergic reaction
If blistering occurs, apply a cold moist compress (3 times a day for about 30 minutes)
Apply moisturizer several times a day, if experiencing an irritant reaction
If after a few days the rash has not responded to treatment and is painful, you should give Dr. Kuthiala Allergy & Asthma a call. We'll treat the affected areas in our Jacksonville, FL office. It is likely that we will prescribe a steroid, ointment, or antihistamine, but you will have to be seen in order for an appropriate method to be introduced.
Contact dermatitis refers to an inflammation of the skin resulting from direct contact of a substance with the surface of the skin. Unlike atopic dermatitis, there is not necessarily a pre-disposition to allergic disease.
Symptoms of contact dermatitis include:
? Red rash, bumps or a burn-like rash on the skin
? Itchy, painful or burning skin
? Blisters and draining fluid
